History of RMHC Fiji

RMHC Fiji is one of over 260 RMHC Chapters around the world. We enable and facilitate family-centered care to families with ill or injured children through our Ronald McDonald Family Room at the Colonial War Memorial hospital.

Since 1974, the RMHC network of Chapters has helped millions of families with sick children find comfort and support when they need it most. Tailored to meet the urgent needs of each community, Fiji is proud to be among the 65 countries and regions across the globe that help provide vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families through core RMHC programs.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Fiji, established in January 2015, is a Fijian registered non-profit charity (Reg # 1012 – Charitable Trust Act (Cap67)) that is an affiliate of the global Ronald McDonald House Program Charity located  in Chicago USA.

A MOU was signed in February 2018 between the Chairman of RMHC Fiji – Marc McElrath and the then Minister for Health & Medical Services – Hon. Ms Rosy Akbar for the establishment of a Ronald McDonald Family Room at the Pediatrics Department at the Colonial War Memorial hospital in Suva and the renovation and upgrade of a mothers’ room

In May 2018, works began at the mothers’ room at the CWMH followed by the construction of the Ronald McDonald Family Room. Fletcher construction were awarded the construction works which cost RMHC Fiji over $140,000.00

An additional $25,000 was spent on furnishing the rooms.

The Acting Prime Minister, Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Hon.Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, officiated at the opening of the Ronald McDonald Family Room on 26th September 2018.

‘The public-private partnership will see families of children undergoing treatment and mothers’ of babies admitted for neo-natal care get better facilities as they wait for their loved ones to recover,’ said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.

He further said that ‘this is again a strong indication of how the private sector can work with Government to provide an edge, if you like, in respect to providing medical services to ordinary Fijians who come through these hospitals.’

The new and upgraded Ronald McDonald Family Room will greatly benefit the families of children admitted at CWM Hospital by providing a comfortable and supportive respite within the walls of the hospital so families can maintain their close proximity to their hospitalized children without having to spend the entire time in a “hospital environment”.
